Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi [2011]

Rejoice, because we're in luck. Among so many straw published so far this year, I am happy to say that I bring the first major work of 2011, because the Radiohead ... PSE, and PJ Harvey - Let entitled Shake England, should you want to search, I do not think it up - not even a shadow of his best albums, but still good because after all is the case of PJ. It will not be the last time you read the name of PJ Harvey in this article, of course, but way to what interests you: what the hell you're talking hard, man? Well if I misled a bit and I do not hear me, because it is not the release sonadísimo seventh album by this artist Multivent, is the first LP of a largely unknown artist of great talent but to give you an idea, worked opening for Grinderman - the other group of Nick Cave - and has received rave until the very Brian Eno, big words. Calvi is Anna and I will put your ass backwards.

If you fall, you lose and you have to provide comment. Ahh! Are the rules.

Who the fuck is this girl? And above all, what makes for me to say so many nice things about her? It is an English singer of Italian descent but, as its name clearly indicates, twenty years. Not only sings, plays guitar and also I have to say it very well, I do not mean it can be accompanied with four chords and a motif facile as it might be natural and more or less all professional singers can do, I mean that this girl has a really good technique, a crushing feeling and a lovely sound - Fender Telecaster + VOX AC30 = success, always -. Skeptics may chasten here. Returning to his voice and personality is unique, deep and sweet, but also draws on many influences it's impossible to hear the record and no memory of Jeff Buckley -also how he plays guitar-, Ute Lemper and the color of the voice and even a little bit Florence and quite PJ Harvey for the singing and obviously the style of music ... no coincidence that the album was produced by Rob Ellis, head sound fairly straightforward PJ, and needless to say that in this respect the record is perfect, without error, an exquisite production.

The disc itself is straightforward, concise, enjoyable. Is not hard or long, is not monotonous, ten songs, that's it. Could have been more -does not include issues Jezebel or Moulinette , previously published single- formats but has simply not been. Nothing fancy footwork, no tricks: a hard smooth, simple, retro. An incredible voice, a guitar with reverb and a little more, a round product. There are issues as Blackout radiables or Desire, but I think in the record that Anna is most striking in songs like The Devil , I'll Be Your Man , Suzzane and also I , where the main attraction of the finest songs is not production but simply to Anna and her virtuosity, both vocal and instrumental. And deservedly, no doubt.
